What is now the island of Manhattan was long inhabited by the Lenape people
and other Algonquian tribes. Dutch settlers began arriving in the early
17th century, and established what would become New Amsterdam. The English
renamed the settlement New York after taking control in 1664. The city
was a strategic spot during the American Revolution, and became the largest
city in the U.S. in 1790. After that, New York served as the chief port
of entry for immigrants from all around the world.
Today, New York City is home to about 8.5 million people, making it the
second-most populous city in North America after Mexico City. New York
City is considered one of the most culturally diverse cities on the planet—by
some estimates, more than 800 languages are spoken in the city in a given
day. Millions of tourists from all around the world come to New York every
year; popular attractions include Central Park, The Empire State Building,
and the Statue of Liberty.
